Second hand 1st gen owner from europe

Recommended Posts

Hi All, I've bought a second (or third or fourth) hand 1st gen in blue last May.

It was only the second time I ever saw one in the netherlands. And this one was a bit neglected.

The previous owner wanted to fix the queeky brakes by lubricating them. And the next day rear ended a semi.

So I was able to buy cheap, and had to get all new brakes, and a new front fork and ballhead set. It now drives like a dream again. And I'm trying to figure out what upgrades to do to it. I'm thinking about converting it to three speed. But I have not yet decided if I will change the front or rear gear to three gears. Front seems easyer to me. But no ane seems to have done it yet.

Anyway. This is it: in front of not my car :)

@Procentje20 , Well it certainly can be accomplished at the crankset but have you considered how your going to mount that front derailleur?   The Battery box interferes with the seat tube clamp mount and that only leaves you with a type E mount. Shifting will not be as precise as the rear 3 speed Cog  Set and derailleur setup and that’s why the rear is the most popular location for gear upgrades . Not sure what the comparable gear inches are between the two but that could be a consideration.

Skip the first 5 pages of the “3 Speed Conversion” Thread because it’s pretty bogus and a shit-sack of misinformation  and conjecture and focus on Scott C Kennedy’s post’s. That’s the most viable option for gearing ⬆️up.

Personally, I skipped the 3 speed conversion and installed the 750Watt Bafang, on my Electric Black Lightning, that will accept the 7speed cogsets (the 750Watt Motor (about to buy my 3rd) and it will slip into your 250 Watt Labeled Bafang Hub Motor case and it will still read 250watt but you’ll have a 750 Watt Motor. Of course you will need to a upgrade to a higher Voltage and Amp Hour  battery to complete and match the best of the modified Sondors Fats, without first waisting, time and money on the 3 speed stuff and sell your stock 250watt motor to some other needy owner on FarceBook to recap some of yore investment.

@Reddy Kilowatt Thanks for the reply. I've ordered this:

https://nl.aliexpress.com/item/32981615270.html?spm=a2g0z.search0104.3.1.f7385c93nqWo6j&ws_ab_test=searchweb0_0%2Csearchweb201602_8_10065_10068_10843_319_10059_10884_317_10887_10696_321_322_453_10084_454_10083_10103_10618_10304_10307_10820_10301_10821_537_536%2Csearchweb201603_53%2CppcSwitch_0&algo_expid=e194df43-92ed-403e-a349-9609339662a9-0&algo_pvid=e194df43-92ed-403e-a349-9609339662a9&transAbTest=ae803_3

To see if it fits, And then I'm going to source some other parts. I'm trying to keep everything low budget. Restoring the bike cost me €100,- And putting in a motor with 3 times the allowed amount of power doesn't seem like a good idea to me. I wont be insured if I crash into someone driving it. So i'm keeping my current motor, which is already a little bit over the legal limit.

Just so you know, the Bafang 250watt geared hub motor and the Bafang 350watt hub motor are exactly the same. Just the rating has been changed as printed on the outside of the motor case to fit the EU limitation for the 250Watt Motor. Motor Manufactures can rate their motors whatever they like and the Smaller Bafangs can handle 1000Watts  as long as it’s not continuous over long periods,  under heavy loads,  like up long or steep hills.

My own 2nd Gen Kickstarter Campaign, “Electric White Lightning”, currently has the stock 350Watt motor (I’ve already purchased the 750 Watt https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32703966572.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.27424c4dOgRNXP  ) and it’s presently using a 52V /  20Ah Battery and the 25Amp Controller.  Installing the 750Watt motor, 11-28T Freewheel, 58T Crankset, 7speed Shimano Derailleur (shifter already installed)   along with a new 60V  LCD, will be upgraded to a  60V Battery and 35amp controller is starting next week. Your Sondors is most likely a 2nd Generation eBike since the 1st Gen Indiegogo Bikes we’re not offed in Blue. Only Yellow with Copper Anodized Rims. Black with Yellow Rims and Black with Red Rims and red printing. Might be a 1st Gen Europe though.
